Position Summary:
The Research Analyst provides analytical and technical support to the Office of Institutional Research in collecting, processing, and analyzing institutional data. This entry-level position offers an excellent opportunity to develop expertise in higher education data analysis while applying strong technical skills in database management, data extraction, and visualization. The successful candidate will work under supervision to support institutional reporting requirements, create data visualizations, and assist with various research projects that inform strategic decision-making across the university
Duties & Responsibilities:
Data Extraction & Management
• Extract data from institutional databases and data warehouses using SQL queries
• Assist in developing and maintaining automated data collection processes
• Perform data quality checks and validation procedures to ensure accuracy and completeness
• Clean and transform raw data into usable formats for analysis and reporting
• Document data extraction processes and maintain query libraries for recurring reports
Data Analysis & Visualization
• Create interactive dashboards and visualizations using Tableau, Power BI, or similar tools
• Develop standard reports and data summaries for various university stakeholders
• Assist in preparing charts, graphs, and tables for presentations and publications
• Support ad-hoc data requests from academic and administrative departments
• Maintain and update existing dashboards and reporting tools
Reporting Support
• Assist senior staff in preparing institutional reports and data submissions
• Help compile data for federal, state, and external reporting requirements
• Support survey completion and external data requests under supervision
• Participate in data verification processes for official institutional reports
• Maintain documentation of reporting procedures and data definitions
Research & Project Assistance
• Support institutional research studies and special projects as assigned
• Assist in enrollment analysis, retention studies, and outcome assessments
• Help prepare data files and preliminary analysis for research initiatives
• Participate in benchmarking studies and peer institution comparisons
• Contribute to the development of institutional fact books and standard reports
Other Duties as Assigned
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
• Proficiency in SQL for data extraction and database querying (intermediate level required)
• Experience with data visualization tools such as Tableau, Power BI, or equivalent platforms
• Knowledge of database concepts and experience working with relational databases
• Familiarity with data warehouse environments and ETL processes
• Advanced Excel skills including pivot tables, VLOOKUP, and data analysis functions
• Basic understanding of statistical concepts and analytical methods
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy
• Ability to identify data patterns, trends, and anomalies
• Problem-solving skills and logical approach to troubleshooting data issues
• Capacity to work with large datasets and complex data structures
• Understanding of data quality principles and validation techniques
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to translate technical findings into clear, accessible reports
• Initiative and ability to work independently on routine tasks
• Time management skills and ability to prioritize competing demands

Minimum Qualifications:
• An earned Bachelor's Degree in computer science, data science, statistics, mathematics, social sciences or a closely related
• Intermediate to advanced SQL skills with ability to write complex queries
• Detail-oriented approach with commitment to accuracy
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines
