Tyvak Nano-Satellite Systems Inc., a Terran Orbital company, is seeking a motivated and experienced Senior Rotor Dynamics Engineer to join our Reaction Wheel Development Team at our Irvine, CA location. As a Senior Rotor Dynamics Engineer, you will be responsible for design of Reaction Wheels and CMGs capable of withstanding launch vehicle and space environments. Associated design efforts will include mass optimization, vibration attenuation, tuned thermal properties and passive or active thermal control accommodations. Design for machinability, test and assembly will be predominant design requirements.

In this role, You Will:
  • Mechanical design of space vehicles and components.
  • End-to-end design cycle technical responsibility for reaction wheel and CMG activities.
  • Generate, maintain, and update 3D model database and 2D drawings.
  • Generate, maintain, and update design documentation.
  • Perform work in an office, lab, and cleanroom environment.
  • First-order static and dynamic analysis of structure assemblies.
  • First-order thermal analysis.
  • Generation of test plans for design verification and test oversight.
  • Participation in hardware requirement generation in collaboration with multiple teams.
  • Collaborative design of vehicle configuration.
  • Peer review design work and mentor junior mechanical engineers.
  • Generate technical content in support of internal and external design reviews.

  • MSc in Mechanical, or Structural, or Aerospace or Mechatronics Engineering.
  • 6+ years of experience designing complex mechanisms and structures.
  • Performing Dynamics, Stress and Fatigue Analysts is a vital part of this role.
  • Bearing selection considering material, Grade, type (deep groove, angular contact, and roller/needle), cage, preload, shield/seal, and rolling element selection.
  • Proven record of application development for performing stress/strain, deflection, vibrations, heat transfer, and rotor dynamics.
  • Strong theoretical background in dynamics of rotating machines, bearings characteristics simulation, rotor-bearing systems design, and vibration analysis.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks CAD tool to create 3D conceptual layouts of rotary machines including bearing and damper arrangements, and kinematic studies.
  • Design and size bearing for optimal performance at specific operation and load.
  • Proficiency in solving bearing-related root cause corrective actions, identifying failure modes of either bearing generated failures or bearing failures due to primary failure.
  • Working knowledge of GD&T and ability to apply GD&T.
  • Experience with finite element analysis software and data processing tools.
  • High attention to detail; ability to preempt design/manufacturing/procurement issues.
  • Proficient in the use of shop tools and precision inspection equipment.
  • To comply with U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.

Desired skillset
  • PhD degree in Mechanical or Structural Engineering is desired.
  • Experience in space applications is highly desirable.
  • Experience in the areas of frequency response analysis, transient response analysis, random response analysis, shock response analysis, deployment analysis, on-orbit/jitter analysis, vibroacoustic analysis, modal survey, model correlation, or vibration isolation and attenuation
  • Experience with industry standard loads and dynamics analysis software (NASTRAN, PATRAN, FEMAP, Matlab, ADAMS, VAOne, etc.)
  • Calculating Hertzian contact stresses. Calculating B10 life using fatigue approach and/or field experience
  • Ability to calculate bearing life for "X" percentage of reliability and how it is incorporated in reliability analysis.
