Who we are

The Office of Data and Research Services (DARS) provides various reports and data for faculty and students. DARS is responsible for state and national reporting, maintains the Texas A&M Accountability website, and is developing an academic services data warehouse for student data from the Registrar, Admissions and Financial Aid.

The Academic Affairs Recruiting Office assisted with the creation and posting of this job requisition for the Office of Data and Research Services.

What we want

DARS is looking for a Data Analyst for general reporting and the creation of dashboards using Tableau. This individual will be a self-starter, willing to learn the content and context of data from various sources. The ideal candidate will also be eager to explore and learn a variety of data skills including statistics, data warehousing, structured query language (SQL), COGNOS, and Tableau. The candidate will demonstrate an interest in understanding reporting guidelines and be able to implement well-documented processes for meeting those requirements. Additional duties include administrative tasks such as maintaining project and work request lists, answering the main phone line and directing calls as needed. Time management, flexibility, organizational skills, attention to detail as well as the ability to work both independently and as part of a team are crucial for this position. Required Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Three years of experience with data collection and analysis


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others
  • Basic SQL skills


Preferred Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in computer, technical or other analytical field such as Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems Management, etc.
  • Five years of experience in information technology. Experience working in higher education. General experience in data management, data dashboard creation, SQL and statistical and analytical skills


Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Experience building data dashboards with Tableau
  • Experience working with SQL to load and update data to existing databases
  • Familiarity with relational database design and modern data warehousing techniques


Job Responsibilities
  • Ad-hoc Reporting - Responds to data requests by querying various databases. Collects, analyzes and interprets data, both quantitative and qualitative analyses, using accepted statistical methods and qualitative research methods. Determines best tool for the request including: Tableau, Excel, SQL queries, COGNOS, ARGOS, etc. In some cases, reporting requires acquisition, cleaning and transforming of new data to merge with other data sets. Compiles data into usable reports.
  • Completion of Surveys - Interprets survey requirements, documents processes and sources, and completes surveys by deadlines. Queries various databases for data and coordinates with other departments to gather data needed for response.
  • Processing Data - Runs scripts to load and transform data needed by department for reporting. Uses SQL tools to manipulate, analyze, clean and transform data. Runs processes during key data acquisition dates.
  • Tableau Dashboard Maintenance and Design - Develops, maintains and designs databases and dashboards under direction of senior staff. May develop and test visualizations. Prepares, maintains, and presents historical and comparative data.
  • Department Website Maintenance - Updates content in Content Management System.
  • Skills Development - Participates in training and professional development to stay current on tools, skills and methodologies related to job duties.
  • Other Duties - Perform other duties as assigned which may include, but are not limited to, the following: Collaboration with the data warehouse team to migrate data into new Enterprise Data Warehouse, assignment and participation in University committees, attending University community meetings as required.
