Description

The Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites (ISMHS) is seeking a Director of Historic Preservation to oversee the stewardship and preservation of historic structures and landscapes across the 12-location museum system. The position serves as ISMHS' expert regarding the preservation and interpretation of historic structures ranging from the early 1800s through the mid-1900s. They are responsible for project management and operational oversight of work involving historic preservation, working closely with facilities and restoration staff; compliance with local, state and federal historic preservation regulations; and ongoing programs and research. The position is based in Indianapolis, as part of the Curatorial, Collections and Research Division, and travels regularly to ISMHS locations around Indiana. Essential duties include:

  • Responsible for the protection of historic structures, landscapes and resources throughout the ISMHS museum system.
  • Oversees historic preservation aspects of projects carried out on ISMHS sites properties, ensuring that the ISMHS meets all state and federal laws, policies and guidelines as well as relevant local ordinances.
  • Develops goals for research and preservation strategies.
  • Advises on impact of potential projects and maintenance on historic structures; recommends appropriate courses of action and documents projects.
  • Prepares necessary Certificate of Approval applications and project documentation; works with specialist firms on historic structure reports, cultural landscape reports and historic preservation master plans as needed.
  • Works closely with the vice president of system facilities and restoration and director of archaeology to coordinate work. Meets regularly to maintain an updated project calendar and prioritize projects.
  • Helps prepare capital and project budgets; provides support for grants and proposals.
  • Develops and manages data and documentation on ISMHS' historic structures and cultural landscapes.
  • Manages the historic sites architectural element collection; ensures the collection is documented in the museum's collections management system.
  • Maintains active and positive relationships with the Division of Historic Preservation and Archaeology (DHPA) and with local, statewide, regional and national stakeholders.
  • Lends expertise to the professional community, including other state agencies; undertakes outreach programs with other Indiana institutions.
  • Publishes papers in journals and popular publications; assists with social media and online resources.


Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in the discipline of historic preservation, architectural history, public history, American studies or other relevant field.
  • Minimum of five to seven years relevant experience in the preservation of historic structures. Experience working in an organization with multiple sites is a plus. Other combinations of relevant education and experience providing the necessary knowledge and skills for this position may be considered.
  • Understanding and compliance with professional standards and with relevant federal and state guidelines including the Secretary of the Interior's Standards and Guidelines for Archaeology and Historic Preservation. Must meet appropriate Secretary of the Interior's Professional Qualification Standards
  • Excellent project management skills.
  • Firm knowledge of research sources and skills needed for historic preservation work.
  • Firm grounding in architectural history and materials. Familiarity with Indiana or Ohio Valley architecture is a plus.
  • Strong writing, public speaking and teaching skills.
  • Ability to pay attention to details while working effectively within the larger context of project and institutional priorities and resources.
  • Good planning skills and demonstrated ability to set priorities; well organized.
  • Strong interpersonal skills; ability to work with a team and facilitate team decisions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and diplomatically with individuals and groups that may have different viewpoints, positions or opinions.
  • Ability to solve problems and clearly communicate options and their implications.
  • Working knowledge of relevant applications. Facility with CAD is a plus.
  • Valid driver's license.
