Director, Research Initiatives for a 75+ employee (and growing) remote education non-profit providing professional learning to K-12 educators nationally
Type of Vacancy: Salaried, full-time
Start date: January-February 2024
Location: Remote/home office anywhere in the continental United States
Report to: Senior Director, Learning & Research
Supervises: Manager, Learning & Research, Data Analyst(s) 
Compensation: The full salary range for this position is $106,000 - $160,335 annually. There are two types of experience being considered for this role: Experience that is directly relevant to the role and Total Working Experience, in all fields. This includes: internships and consulting work. In collaboration with the hiring manager, the People and Culture team calculates experience based on the candidate’s most current resume. When calculating the offer, consideration is given to candidates that possess additional qualifications (i.e., desired qualifications). Teaching Lab will generally cap salaries for new employees at 105% of the midpoint to allow for continued growth in the role over time.

SUMMARY OF POSITION
The Director, Research Initiatives is responsible for developing and leading the execution of the strategy to evaluate and share the impact of our professional learning on teachers and students to strengthen Teaching Lab’s research design capacity and learning organization culture. The incumbent will develop, iterate, and execute research designs for impact evaluations; act as primary lead on internal and external research projects aimed to determine Teaching Lab’s impact and/or the impact of specific interventions;  support with results interpretation and dissemination; and delegate work to team members to support Teaching Lab’s mission and align with the values.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

The Director, Research Initiatives will hold responsibilities in the following functional areas:

  • External engagements for program evaluation
      • Lead and manage the Learning & Research Team’s external research collaborations, including acting as the liaison between external researchers and/or evaluators and the internal Program team to ensure alignment and execution on research design implementation (e.g. consent processes, randomization, implementation of interventions, data collection)
      • Form and deepen partnerships with key researchers and funders 
      • Collaborate on the application process for federal or other research grants with rigorous research and/or external evaluation components
      • Lead and/or collaborate with external researchers and evaluators on district research approval processes
      • Lead and manage reporting for research projects funded by federal or other research grants or philanthropy
  • Formative research for innovation
      • With the Senior Director, collaborate with the Program team to develop and implement short cycles of formative research for programmatic innovations (e.g., A/B testing)
      • With the Senior Director, manage the support of intervention implementation, data collection, data analysis, and dissemination of results from short cycles of formative research for programmatic innovation
      • With the Program team, manage L&R’s support to the Teacher Advisory Board and other future advisory boards, including collaborating on designing engagement opportunities, analyzing, and sharing results
  • Internal Evaluation of Program Impact
      • Focus: evaluation design, evaluation tools design, analysis, data reporting, and data management
      • Act as “Analyst” on assigned program project teams, typically those that form part of internal or external research initiatives, to support data collection - attending project team meetings, advising project leader and client manager on details and timeline of data collection, supporting to interpret and translate data finding
      • Develop, iterate, and execute research designs for specific projects under the direction of the Senior Director, Learning & ResearchManage the development, iteration user-testing, and finalization of data collection tools, such as surveys, focus groups and interview guides, and other rubrics
      • Manage the analysis of quantitative and qualitative data and interpretation of results for meaning and actions
      • Manage the creation of visual reports and presentations for internal and external audiences
      • Lead the reporting of results and findings to a variety of audiences, including funders 
      • Manage the L&R team’s support to the Program team to collect data from partners and disseminating results by creating communications and coaching internal teams to interpret and discuss findings, specifically projects that form part of internal or external research initiatives
      • Manage support to internal teams members to use data and evidence to make decisions with partners
      • Manage the development of “business rules” for data analysis, such as criteria for n size, protocols for missing data, etc.
      • Support the Senior Director, Research & Program Evaluation to set, evolve, and execute Teaching Lab’s overall program and impact evaluation strategy 
      • Support the Director, Research & Program Evaluation in the management of the data repository, including processes for organizing, cleaning, and maintaining data sources and codebooks, as well as reviewing internal data dashboards for accuracy
  • Cross-functional Collaboration 
      • Collaborate with others in the Shared Operations and Program divisions to generate ideas, strategies, and systems to meet both organizational, programmatic, and learning and research goals
      • Respond to evaluation tools or processes, dashboards, or data system-related issues in a timely manner
      • Engage in additional work as needed to meet organizational business needs and priorities
  • Engage in Continuous Learning
      • Stay abreast of key research and guidance in the field, attend learning experiences to build skills and competencies in program evaluation, data analysis, data management, or data visualization
      • Engage in personal and organized learning opportunities as a team member at an organization which aspires to be antiracist and champions racial equity
      • Seek and respond to feedback from staff and adjust evaluation tools or processes, dashboards, or data system-related processes accordingly
      • Create and deliver training to other team members on core skills or competencies within the Director, Research Initiatives role which is also transferable and critical for other roles.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Senior Director, Learning & Research and/or Executive Team.

KEY SUCCESS INDICATORS (KSI)

The Director, Research Initiatives is accountable for achieving goals set in collaboration with their manager, aligned with FY24 goals, and especially, Key Success Indicators (KSI) like: 

  • Research becomes the way we do our work: Teaching Lab pursues “small r”(i.e., continuous improvement) and “big R” (i.e., rigorous research studies) research in every partnership.
      • 90% of partnerships which completed services collect and analyze Educator Surveys 2x/ year, with at least 50% response rate for the post- survey based on the pre-survey responses
      • 90% of partnerships that complete services collect and analyze student data and teacher practice data, relevant to their SOW and aligned to the FY24 evaluation plan
      • 100% of partners with sufficient data receive accurate mid-year and end-of-year reports 
      • Continuously improve our data infrastructure plan to include more robust data collection, storage, cleaning, managing, visualization and sharing of data
      • Publish Impact Report 2024 by August 2024
      • Successfully support at least two external research initiatives beyond our internal evaluation to help us more rigorously evaluate and improve our core PL model while deepening partnerships with key researchers and funders
  • Operate efficiently and equitably: Develop and refine internal operational structures and systems to allow all team members and contractors to do their best work every day
      • Design, deploy, and train staff members to make use of various real-time and interactive data dashboards which summarize all data collected through partnerships
      • Provide ongoing coaching to the Program team to reflect data back to partners to drive successful collaborations, including in preparation for mid-year and end-of-year stepbacks
      • 90% of FTEs and PTEs agree that they “have the data or information I need to do my work right”
  • People Managers: I will inspire, enable, empower, coach and support team members to develop competencies and achieve goals.
    • Staffing 
      • 80% of open positions (employee and contractor) on my team are filled within 10 weeks from the time of posting
    • Employee Onboarding & Orientation
      • New employees on my team transition seamlessly to their team: 100% of employees receive and meet with their assigned buddy within two (2) weeks of completing onboarding with the People & Culture team
      • 100% of new employees on my team complete onboarding and orientation training assignments within the first 90 days of employment
    • Employee Learning & Development
      • 100% of my team will engage in professional development throughout the year via use of the annual Total Well-being funds, Boon Health coaching and/or LinkedIn Learning courses
    • Performance Development System (PDS)
      • 100% of employees on my team are engaged in all relevant phases of the performance development system (PDS)
      • 80% of my direct reports who engage in the PDS report, at each phase, agree that the Home Manager provided coaching or timely feedback regarding their performance.
      • 80% of my direct reports agree that they are receiving valuable, values- and competency-aligned leadership coaching from their Home Managers
    • People Management
      • 100% positive employee retention on my team, with intentional performance management to counsel out employees who are not performing and contributing to the overall mission
    • Leadership Competencies
      • Demonstrates growth in competencies on a scale
      • 80% of direct reports agree that they are receiving meaningful feedback and coaching about their leadership competency development
  • Project Lead: I will effectively lead my project teams to positive outcomes. Operate efficiently and equitably: Develop and refine internal operational structures and systems to allow all team members and contractors to do their best work every day
      • 90% of employees on the projects that I lead agree that they “have the data or information I need to do my work right” 
      • 90% of employees on the projects that I lead agree that the work processes and procedures are clear and sufficient

Requirements

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

    • Bachelor’s degree in education, public policy, economics, social sciences, statistics, data science, learning science, or management or related field preferred
    • Five years of professional working experience in program evaluation and/or data analysis
    • Significant experience with several of the following functions: project and/or program evaluation, data analysis, data management, and data-informed program design
    • Demonstrable track record of developing or refining tools and/or evaluation instruments, collecting and managing data, including in online surveys in third-party platforms, and analyzing data, effectively interpreting and communicating findings, and making data-driven decisions 
    • Demonstrated success mobilizing partners and communicating importance of data for organizational and social sector improvement
    • Experience using SQL to manage and store data, relate multiple databases 
    • Experience using Excel, R, or a related programming language to perform statistical analyses
    • Experience creating data visualizations
    • Track record of effective people management aligned to equity values
    • Background in education is not necessary, but interest in PK-12 education is a must
    • Supervisory experience

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • Master’s degree in education, public policy, economics, social sciences, statistics, data science, learning science, or management or related field preferred
    • Experience with K-12 education data or context
    • Experience implementing grant-funded research and/or program evaluations (e.g., philanthropic or federal)

WORKING CONDITIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

    • Ability to work a flexible schedule to support operational needs
    • Ability to perform the essential project, duties and responsibilities with or without accommodation
    • All team members are expected to support program/project needs which could mean that you play multiple roles at Teaching Lab (i.e., project lead, support, subject matter expert, etc.). 
    • Travel could be required for the role.  Travel is determined based on business needs and can vary depending on partnership/contract requirements.
